The Carnegie Club of St Andrews is delighted to announce our third speaker of the year: Dr. David Starkey CBE who will lead a discussion on "History and Our Present Discontents: from Henry VIII’s break with Rome to Brexit and beyond."
Dr. David Starkey's career has spanned numerous accolades in the field of history, including a fellowship in the Royal History Society, receiving the Medlicott Medal for Service to History in 2001, multiple honorary degrees in British universities, an honorary fellowship of the Fitzwilliam College of the University of Cambridge, and an appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2007. He has published multiple books on English royal history. His work stretches into television and radio, where he has written and presented multiple documentaries for Channel 4 and the BBC. He also hosted a show on Talk Radio UK for multiple years and was a panelist on BBC Radio 4's 'Moral Maze'.
In July 2020, Dr. David Starkey faced criticism due to comments on slavery he made in a podcast interview with Darren Grimes. This led to the withdrawal of his Medlicott Medal, his resignation from his honorary fellowship in the Fitzwilliam College, and his membership in the Royal Historical Society.
Dr. David Starkey denies any racism in his comments and has continued his work through columns on 'The Critic' and his YouTube podcast 'David Starkey Talks'.
The event will consist of an initial talk followed by an interview by club members. After which the discussion will turn to Q&A.
