Philanthrocapitalism: For Better or For Worse?
In light of recent scandals connected with philanthropy (i.e. The Sackler Family,
Jeffrey Epstein), philanthrocapitalism has been given new meaning, with its premise
and sources facing further criticism. As such it makes us wonder, are there clear
benefits or do negative aspects outweigh the positive impact? Therefore, it is worth
discussing:
Should the intent behind the charitable donation (tax-exemption, reputational
laundering) be questioned before accepting the gift? Does corporate altruism
exist?
Do you believe small-scale, grass-roots philanthropy or top-down, large
giving has more power to transform society?
What is your opinion on Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy?
Can philanthrocapitalism justify socially irresponsible actions?
Are museums more unfairly scrutinized over their donors than universities?
